As a fourth-generation silversmith from the Acoma and Laguna Pueblo tribes, my art is not just a profession but a profound cultural journey. Rooted in the rich traditions passed down through generations, I view my work as a sacred duty to preserve and promote our ancestral knowledge and artistic heritage.
Being from an underrepresented Native community has shaped my identity as a culture bearer. I have experienced the challenges and injustices faced by my people, including the impact of generational racism, substance abuse, and industrial genocide. However, through the recovery process I am undergoing, I have found strength and resilience in my art. It has become a healing force that empowers me to rise above adversity and inspires others to do the same.
Through workshops, demos, and engagements with museums and galleries, I am passionately sharing my knowledge and expertise with my community. I conduct art classes for the elders and youth, empowering the next generation to connect with their cultural roots and embrace their creative passions. My son will be my student, and as the next in line to teach, he will carry on the legacy of our family's silversmithing tradition.
I am committed to attending major art shows to showcase our unique cultural heritage globally. The recognition gained from selling my art in Japan, Australia, and Aspen allows me to challenge stereotypes and promote understanding of Native communities. My goal is to create a bridge between tradition and modernity, while preserving the
authenticity of our craft.
Looking forward, I envision a future where the art of silversmithing remains a vibrant part of our community. By providing mentorship and apprenticeship opportunities, I will pass down our cherished traditions, ensuring that our cultural heritage continues to thrive for generations to come. Through my journey, I aspire to inspire others, create unity, and strengthen the cultural fabric of our community.
